Intro to Living in the Yukon
✨ My Whitehorse Years: A Little Piece of My Story
Many of you already know that I spent six years living in Whitehorse, YT — some of the most memorable years of my life. If you were to ask my son, I’m sure he’d say the same.
Getting to the Yukon was no small feat. The way it all unfolded… well, you could say it was meant to be, whether you believe in fate or not.
I had a friend who owned a highway lodge on the Alaska Highway, and let’s just say he talked me into coming up for the summer to work as his cook and baker. What a summer it was. Eye‑opening, life‑changing, unforgettable. Honestly, I could write an entire book about that season — some moments were amazing, some not so much, but every single one was memorable.
When the summer ended, I had absolutely no desire to go back home. The adventure had begun, and I wasn’t ready to let it end. Thankfully, I was a Registered Care Aide and had no trouble getting on at one of the long‑term care homes right in Whitehorse. And just like that… the journey truly began.
❄️ Only in Whitehorse…
…could you walk into McDonald’s and be told they’d run out of French fries.
…were the people more friendly and helpful than anywhere else I’ve ever lived.
…did life carry on at –40 like it was nothing.
…did everyone run on “their own time,” and no one minded if that meant being late.
…could you look around and feel surrounded by the most breathtaking beauty every single day.
I truly could go on and on, but in the end, my most special memories always come back to the people — kind, unforgettable souls who I’m grateful to call my friends.
Is it any wonder that I name Whitehorse as my favorite place to live?! Oh the memories - truly a beautiful walk down memory lane! 💛
So tell me…where would you call your most memorable home? Share with me if you will
Until next time,
Darlene
